How the calculator works

It uses the veterinary energy formula: resting needs RER = 70 × (kg0.75), then a maintenance factor for life stage, neuter status, activity, and goal. Calories convert to cups using the “kcal/cup” printed on your food. Full method on how we estimate.

Questions

Where do I find my food’s kcal/cup?
It’s on the bag or the brand’s site, usually listed as “calorie content” in kcal ME/cup. If yours differs from the default, enter it for an accurate cup count.
How many meals a day?
Most adult dogs and cats do well on two meals; puppies and kittens need three to four. The calculator splits the daily amount across meals for you.
Should I insure this breed too?
Possibly — see the insurance-by-breed estimate for your breed’s risk tier.
